Released in 98 when jazz influenced dnb was in its prime and Roni Size and EZ Rollers were 0wning my earholes... Dissected is a gem and is still one my favorite DnB albums... (he even coproduced another Jazz n Bass classic... Peshay’s Miles From Home) Not only is Dissected a cohesive artist album but it also trades the usual bass synths for sampled guitar licks. Something which, well just doesnt happen much anymore. Decoder along with Substance and vocalist Sian Evans went on to form Kosheen and has since released 2 albums (the first one is DOOOPE...) to some commercial success... Pick that up.

Hacked is the only non-dnb track on Dissected.

Talked to Justin Martin (Buzzin’ Fly) at the Andy Caldwell release party at Darkroom. WHAT A SHITHOLE VENUE. Its like The Top but with crappier sound a larger space and less shit and piss on the floor. Totally the kind of place I want to listen to great music in. Ugh.

Anyway. Before I moved to SF Sammy D was telling me about a track they just finished and were debuting at WMC… but never heard anything else about it. Maybe, Justin played it at Buzzin’ Fly. Here is some more music I found in Columbia. Though, not Columbian… the DJ was bangin’ it at a club in Bogotá called In Vitro (Carrera 7 / Calle 59). Most of what he played was a mixture of hip hop (good shit), Rnb, and some Salsa, Merengue, Reggaeton. Proper night. Good crowd. Cool space. Cheap Drinks.

Anyway, Alliance Ethnik are some of the more popular of French hip hoppers, along with the Lewis Parker, that aren't spitting gangsta shit. Their second album Fat Comeback which dropped in ‘99 features a lot American rapcats including Common, Rahzel, De La Soul and Pete Rock on some production. Quality French hip hop.

Cheb Mami is a Rai singer from Algeria whose seen some popularity, but is still probably most famous for that last Sting Single/Car Commericial thing.

First up, some genteel Japanese idm by Naoko Sasaki out of Morioka, Japan. Naoka lays her fragile voice on top of guitars, small grimey distorted bass stabs and glitch. Quite a beautiful combination actually… from the album Snow Bird on Happy Music. Any fans of that Morr music flavor should absolutely peep this album.

The Wideboys are some of my favorite UK Garage producers before Grime took over and I tuned out somewhat. I don’t keep up with it as much as I used too simply because not much comes out in that 1999 / year 2000 styleee of two step mixed with equal parts pop and bass… Some of my favorite producers in that style have all but disappeared… Dub Syndicate, Architechs, Bump and Flex… where the fuck did you go? Fortunately, MJ Cole, The Wideboys, Sunship and a new generation of MJ Cole offspring are still holding it down… Here is the new 12” on Prolific… Buy it. Play it.

The banger of the week is a joint I’ve been (lazily) trying to track down for a minute… DJ Flight has been rinsing a drum and bass bootleg of it for months... which is an absolutely heavy heavy tune (and one of my favorites) in the dubwise stylee… I still don’t know who did that bootleg… anyway… the original vocal and sample are from I Wayne’s version flowing on top of the Father Jungle Rock Riddim which was produced by Patrick Henry and C Williamson on the Loyal Soldier imprint. (They deserve a post of their own in the future… Sandor’s album Harmonica and Cross was absolutely dope. A gem I would’ve never found outside the Betalounge Record Club)… Aardvarck is equally ill. I have a couple 12s by him and mostly he represents on that minimal idm sort o tip…

This cut is one of my absolute favs and probably closest to the Glitch Hop format.

I’m definitely not into every track on this one, like I’ve said before some of these cats lose me at the bridge. But if your hungry for soul and R&B or just want to kick it with your girl and she’s tired of you playin’ that R.Kelly toss your salad cut… definitely peep it.

So THIS is my funkin joint… Love it. Love it.

I wasn’t going to post this, since I try to stick to stuff you are less likely to have heard already but this cuts still a banger in the club. Cool & Dre are on the production this time. They were responsible for the good cut on the Game’s album Hate it or Love it (cop the Mary J. Blige remix) and are getting a lot of hype as the next Timbo-Neptunes-Liljon-Kanye... But I don’t see it… since they don’t really have a style of their own yet. Like Jermaine Dupri… Definately skilled, but he never really defined a sound of his own. If G-Funk was hot. He did that. If Crunk was hot. He did that. If it was early Timbaland style beats… He copped those. Same with Cool & Dre… so far.

Anyway…

The high pitched synth on top of the low slung beat is just illin’ on this. And I dig Fat Joe aka Joey Crack’s flow… Cept his singin’… Guy needs to recognize he he will never be as larynxlly talented as Ja Rule, but one day maybe if he tries real hard, takes a class or two at The BK Community College he can best Nelly’s country singin’ ass.

Course at the end of the day a hot track is still a hot track.

Here is some of the stuff ive been bangin’ this week…

as far as albums go… It’s been all about Triple P and Demon Dayz from the Platinum Pied Pipers and the Gorillaz respectively.

I was surprised by the new Gorillaz actually… I had it in my head that it was gonna suck... or sound like Dangermouse the entire time. Well of course it doesn’t and it doesn’t. Demon Dayz is the funkin’ shit… Different from the last and friggin' excellent. MF Doom is on there… Hell I don’t even need to post any of it… you’ll see it everywhere else to be sure… Just go buy it.

It is one of the best albums of 2005 so far.

The PPP album is disappointing only in the fact that there aren’t any NEW bangers... I’ve heard pretty much everything on it already at their live shows or in online interviews…

That might sound like I'm not saying its good... I'M NOT. IT IS. The whole thing is quality Detroit soul. Hell, Steve Spacek is on that shit… not to mention its on Ubiquity… COP IT. PLEASE.

NER*D - In Search of... The Neptunes

Before über-production duo The Neptunes got any stateside props for their “rock group” side project N*E*R*D, the album was released first in Europe in the Fall of 2001. Here in the U.S. it was immediately panned by most U.S. Hip Hop rags (yaaaawn…) So the day it was supposed to finally be released in the states, in early 2002, N*E*R*D - In Search of… The Neptunes was pulled from the shelves and Chad and Pharell went back to the studio… With help from Star Trak signees Spy Mob they rerecorded the drum tracks and many of the synth parts this time using live instruments. The previous version had been created (like all the other Neptunes tracks) with synthesizers, samplers, etc… and besides the song structure and vocals you didn’t (at least I didn’t) really think “rock music” (choke, cough)… So this was more of a “Rock” repackaging if you will… giving it a more classifiable and band based sound.

SO. Finally, it would see a true U.S. release… in April 2002… almost a year after the original demo surfaced. The result is the N*E*R*D you saw playing Coachella and all the other big amphitheatres and festivals around the U.S…

But how did the original album sound?!?!? Well… hmm… I think… better… in some cases… in others the rock rework edges out the original. Personally, I prefer the original sampler and synth version… as I’m a synthetic music fucknut… But there are a couple songs that were definitely improved upon with Spymob’s instrumentation.

I really dig the vocal on this one… BUT… if you are one of those DJs afraid to rinse a full vocal… the instrumental on the flip side stands on its own… Recloose needs to release a new album… like… NOW.

The vocalist on the cut, Joe Dukie, has been in the wings for a minute with other releases on Sonar Kollective and Best Seven… the later with ill Austrian MC… Sugar B. So show Dukie some love…

This is the best track from the 11 track bootleg that’s been floatin’ around… which is NOT the final version of the album… Jay Dee and Kanye West produce the entire thang… so you know the productions on point… though I’m not much of a Kanye fan. This bootleg is quality... but I really wanted him to keep pushin it like the his last album... Though commercially unsuccessful... Electric Circus was absolutely genius… ahead of its time… and will be looked back on as a CLASSIC… the Soulquarians came on point… but Hip Hop just ain’t ready. I thought you knew?

Last but not certainly not least... I heard this on the radio a couple weeks ago… turned it off immediately... it reminded me of that Lil' Jon tune I'm not feelin' (there's not many)... That Toma track from Miami's Pitbull... its nothing but a Lil’ Jon beat and an annoying pitched kicked drum for the bassline. Very basic… Well this track is the same idea… even uses the same kick for the bass. But strips the beat down even more… using only a snap and an occasional skat skat (or is it skeet skeet?) for hi hats… the real highlight here for me is The Ying Yang Twins flow... They spit that southern slang in a way only they can… going so far as to deliver their lyrics in a whisper… a first for a mainstream rap song… It wasn’t until I heard it a couple more times… before I GOT IT… Produced by the Ying Yang Twins' DJ Smurf... Yes that DJ Smurf... who used to produce miami bass back in the 90's for Shy-D and others. Before producing his biggest hit to date for Ying Yang, he was probably most well know for working on the Luke, and Kizzy Rock track... B-Otch.
